After hitting theaters in the U.S. on Nov. 16, pirated videodisc copies of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone surfaced in China within days, pushing Warner Bros. to accelerate an official release there.

The studio secured approval from China Film Import & Export Corp., the country's only licensed importer and distributor of foreign films, and set a Chinese release date of Jan. 31.

Officials plan a massive rollout on about 1,200 screens, with the run extending through the lucrative Chinese New Year holiday (Feb. 12–18), traditionally dominated by domestic titles.

Beijing’s long-standing practice allowed only 10 foreign revenue-sharing films a year, but authorities agreed last year to raise the de facto limit to 20, opening a window for this rapid clearance.

Warner Bros. executives Veronika Kwan-Rubinek (president, international distribution) and Sue Kroll (president, international marketing) announced the China plans.

The studio has experience with revenue-sharing arrangements in China dating back to 1994, beginning with The Fugitive.

Globally, the film shattered opening records across many markets — including the U.K., U.S., Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Japan, Australia and several Nordic and European countries — and had earned $262.2 million outside North America as of Wednesday.
